It's spring time in Leavenworth and that means the cliffs and boulders that are snow covered in winter are coming into season.

We stopped by our local bookstore, A Book For All Seasons in Leavenworth to chat with manager Stephen Sharpe and get a few book recommendations

Lilia Grundy speaks about new developments and the upcoming groundbreaking on the new Snowy Owl Theater.

Leavenworth has dozens of notable crags popular with climbers, but there is only one Castle Rock.

Take a snowboard, chop off the tail, widen the nose, remove the bindings and you get a pretty good idea of what a snowsurf looks like.

A typical day for Kyle Miller might go something like this: wake up early, drink chocolate milk, then hike 20 miles to the top of a craggy peak in the Cascades and ride down 5000 feet of vertical terrain.

We caught up with Stefan Mitrovich to get a report on local mountain biking trail conditions.

It's Tomato Time!
Photo taken 05.18.2012 The snow has (nearly) melted off of Wedge Mountain, the iconic triangle shaped mountain easily viewable from the town of Leavenworth. A snow free Wedge Mountain is a common sign among local gardeners that it's safe to plant tender annuals such as tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, basil and dahlias.
Photo by Amy Wilder The safe time for planting without threat of frost typically occurs in the Upper Valley around the middle of May, while gardeners in Cashmere and Wenatchee are able to plant a little earlier. Although there is still a tiny bit of snow hanging on, we are going to go ahead and say the coast is clear. Forecasts call for cooling temperatures, compared to the weather we have had lately, with highs in the low 70's but low temperatures should remain well above freezing, hovering in the low 40's. Drip Wall - Leavenworth Rock Climbing with Sol & PatrickSol Wertkin sends a message late Wednesday night that reads "Headed up to the Drip Wall and gonna give Roothless a try in the morning. You want to shoot some of the action?" Having spent a little time at the Drip Wall I knew how beautiful a spot it was so I quickly accepted the invite to shoot the climbing here. Upon arrival at the cliff around 945 I found Patrick Hennessey was already nearing the anchors on Toothless which a brilliant slightly traversing line through overhanging granite. Really scenic shots exist just on the uphill side of the cliff so I hustled up to a good vantage to shoot a bit! Then Sol and Patrick quickly redpointed Toothless again which gave me a chance to shoot a bit from above. After that Sol nearly sent Roothless (12d) which looks impossible to me. Super thin and wicked steep! We shot stills and video until 12:30 and headed home before the sun hit the wall. Keep an eye out for the video as it's always entertaining to hear Sol talk about the hardmen who put up these wild routes like Super Dave Moroles, Max Dufford, Mike Massey and more. Patrick Hennessey climbs Toothless (11a) note waterfall behind him which is so named the Drip after the infamous huge ice climb that forms here in winter! Sol Wertkin climbs Roothless (12d)

Tumwater Mountain Provides Great Views of LeavenworthTrip report from contributor Andy Jaynes...
![]() Boulder-covered peak of Tumwater Mountain On Monday, May 14th, some friends and I hiked up Tumwater Mountain that creates natural Northwestern boundary of Leavenworth, WA. The trailhead starts at the end of Ranger Rd, off of Skill Hill Dr. In years past, the metal access gate would be opened allowing vehicles with decent ground-clearance and tires to drive the majority of the way to the summit. As of Monday, the gate was still closed making the summit a 2+ hour brisk-hike away. Just A Couple of Days in May in Chamonix: with Michael "Bird" ShaefferAn update on speed flying and skiing with Leavenworth local and Birdwhere founder Michael "Bird" Shaffer straight from the mountains of Chamonix, France. Photography by Mark Shelp
On the 10th of May, we tried and skied the Mallory with Mark Shelp. You can see the track down through the crux with maximum exposure. Tres Difficile td +.Then we got to the diagonal ramp where it was supposed to get easier and it turned into nearly breakable rain ice. We down climbed with two rappels all the way out the exit couloir. What a special place and great experience for us and for the people in the cable car! |
